After years of collecting quilting magazines and fabrics, Linda
Batley finally did what any serious quilter would do. She opened
"Quilter's Quest" in Ellison Bay, creating Door County's
only quilting specialty shop — a showroom with thousands
of fabrics, an array of quilting materials, and a host of pattern
books to help other quilters bring their quilting ambitions to life.
"I guess you could call me a fabri-holic," says Linda,
"I've got over 1,500 original fabrics to choose from."
A brief glance across the showroom at Quilter's Quest and it's easy
to see what she means. Lining the walls and shelves are every color
imaginable, an array of hand-dyed fabrics, and fabrics printed with
nautical, patriotic, geometric, striped, and paisley designs. Her
fabrics come from companies like Moda, Hoffman, P&B, Timeless
Treasures, and Kona Bay, to name just a few. Each manufacturer produces
100% cotton bolts whose designs are printed once and then discontinued.
As a result, each fabric at Quilter's Quest has its own rare appeal
and lends itself to creating something truly personal.
Linda’s Quilter’s Quest also has the specialized hardware
that makes quilting possible. She sells rotary cutters (handy tools
that work like a pizza cutter to cut through layers of fabric),
specialty rulers, batting, and templates galore — all of which
give quilters the freedom and ability to unlock their imaginations.
She also sells hundreds of individual patterns and dozens of quilting
books. "It amazes me," says Linda, "with just a few
simple items, people can create the most astonishing works of art.
If you give 10 people the same fabrics, they will come back with
10 different quilts — each with their own stunning design."
At Quilter's Quest, customers also have the opportunity to browse
through some original quilting techniques. Linda has patterns for
transferring photos onto quilts, creating landscapes, creating optical
illusions, and making clothing, handbags, wall-hangings, table-runners,
throw pillows, and placemats, all of which, she says, make “giving
gifts from the heart” an extra joy. Linda also makes custom
quilts herself and offers quilting classes at “inspirational”
locations throughout Door County.
Quilter’s Quest, which opened in the spring of 2002, is also
helping to keep the tradition of quilting healthy in the Midwest.
As Linda says, “There’s a friendship among quilters.
Quilters like to ‘shop hop’ and see what different stores
have to offer. At Quilter’s Quest we have the broad fabric
selection that quilters are hunting. For me, it’s also great
to get to know other quilters and share ideas.”
In December of 2005, Quilter’s Quest moved to 326 Country
Walk Drive in Sister Bay. The new location offered Linda the opportunity
to expand the size of the store. You may contact Linda Batley with
